English
For English I used the topic of Fatphobia and put it into the context of a poem. The poem is written to be current self talking to younger self. The speaker talks about growing up with their mother during her eating disorder. The kid is eventually sucked into the depth of mental illness along with their mother. The speaker talks to their younger self and explain their mothers eating disorder as a bug. The poems tone shifts around from talking about their mothers illness pre their birth, when they were too young to understand, when they got sick too, and the beginning of the healing process.

Art
For art I used the broad topic of fat phobia, narrowed down to fat fascination, and put that idea into the context of a mono print. I chose to start my piece out with a lino slab so that I could make multiple runs and try a couple different things out.I left lines in Lino cut to add dimension even with the acrylic on top. I first. sketched out my plan, although my draft is vastly different than my final product. I then made about 4 or 5 prints with the lino. After the prints were dry, a picked the few that might not have printed down as well as the others, and started going in with ink and acrylic. For one of the prints I used mostly acrylic and it could be easily confused for a regular acrylic painting. I chose to used blocky gradients to shade the figure. I would have like to go back into most of my prints and add and clean up some things, like the eye in the mouth.
My piece was driven by the idea of negative observation. I wanted to create something that illustrates the strange looks that fat people receive but more so the survival skill of staring back. In my piece you can see that the figure is unclothed and vulnerable. It’s nipples are eyes looking back at the observer, watching their every move and the mouth on the belly has an eye inside. My original thought behind the mouth and eye was the person observing is expecting gluttony (maybe food in the mouth) but instead there's another eye, on high watch.
